Reactions have begun to pour in from fans across the country following reports that ex-Super Eagles legend, Uche Okechukwu fondly called the ‘Gentle Giant’ has retired from the world of football and embrace hunting.
According to the trio of Enyinnaya Appolos (chief press secretary to Governor Okezie Ikpeazu), Bright Eze and Livinus Nwabughogu, it was an atmosphere of conviviality seeing the former US ’94 and Atlanta ’96 blockbusting defender ageing gracefully at his country home in Umuoria village, in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State.
His footballing career started when he was discovered at Eziama primary school in Aba together with his brother and was sponsored to reach the climax of his talent.
A Turkish citizen, Okechukwu who adopted the name ‘Deniz Uygar’ while playing for Fenerbahçe SK in his hay days has since taken to hunting in his home town.
Hear him: “Hunting is my hobby. Even in Europe, I go hunting. I love doing that. In fact, we are hunting in the next village (Itu) on Tuesday…”
Apparently, hunting is just a passion for him and not a state of poverty as many ascribed. But trust Nigerians and their reactions…
Chibueze Confidence Confidence:
He was one of the footballers that make Nigeria proud. I can’t forget Atlanta 96, where he played with the likes of Oliseh, Finidi, Oruma, West, Amokachi, KANU etc. I remember that he was discovered at Eziama primary school in Aba and was later sponsored to travel abroad. But today, how many of our politicians can sponsor our numerous talented footballers?

I don’t think it is normal for a person of his profile been in the village hunting for animals. Please which type of animals? He needs God’s intervention.
Paul Uwadima Eze
He is hunting as a hobby and not out of lack please. Many rich men in Europe, US etc hunt as hobby including former President Bush among others.

We worshiped together sometime last year at Saint gal’s itu ngwa he still that humble and gentle person he used to be
We only celebrate our heroes in death and it must stop going forward. This our brother and countless others needs to be celebrated now they are still with us.
History has it that there has never been a good replacement of him since ever he left Nigerian Super Eagle, please the NGWA UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB should be Named after Him, he deserves it, the chief press secretary use your good office to honor him. He was a great defender and also presently a serious hunter.
Must every retired footballer go into coaching…? If you know Uche very well, he is silent achiever…he has been instrumental to every single Nigerian and Most African footballer that has gone to play in Fenerbahçe in Turkey…just last year, he has come up with a soccer academy in Aba, am aware that he concluded with the state government on the playing/Training ground..
