An American has been awarded the highest ranking traditional chieftaincy title ever held by a non-indigene within or outside Igbo Land.
The colourful decoration of Dr. Ron Piervincenzi, chief executive officer of United States Pharmacopeia (USP) as the ‘Ekwueme 1 of Nigeria’ by Nigerian Pharmaceutical Manufacturers took place at the prestigious Renaissance Hotel, Ikeja GRA, Lagos, Nigeria.
According to the organisers, the traditional chieftaincy title bestowed on Piervincenzi was in recognition of his contribution to the growth of pharmaceutical manufacturing industry in Nigeria.
Prince Emeka Ugwu, managing director of Nemel Pharmaceuticals, explained that the title of Ekwueme 1, which literally means ‘He who does whatever he promises,’ is truly befitting for credible personalities like the USP boss.
His view seemed to be in agreement with Dr. Stella Okoli, chairman, Emzor Group who said until now, no Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO) or group has gone the extra mile to train pharma manufacturing professionals the way USP does.
The United States Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) is an independent, scientific, nonprofit organization improving public health by setting standards for the identity, strength, quality, and purity of medicines, food ingredients, and dietary supplements manufactured, distributed and consumed worldwide.
