The name Premier Lotto might not immediately ring a
bell to the ears of an average Nigerian but the soubriquet ‘Baba Ijebu’ does.
This is the intriguing story of Sir Kesington Adebukunola Adebutu whom many people know
simply as Baba Ijebu.
Adebutu is the Chairman of Premier Lotto Limited.
He is also the founder of Kessington Adebukunola Adebutu Foundation. A
philanthropist to the core, he started life as a game man in the early 1960s.
His graceful ageing face appears in virtually every
dailies you come across today as colleagues, business partners and friends took
out time to celebrate his 78th birthday in the media today.
Adebutu whom many believed have been in the gaming
business all his life started operating as a pool agent as far back as 1963. Lotto
is not the only game business he runs, there are other ones like casino and
pool.
According to him,

 “Having
no capital, I looked for a business that required little or no capital and what
came to my mind was to be a pool agent, because to be a pool agent, what you
just need is to get a table and your pen. So, you can see it is not capital
intensive. I did that briefly and within a short time with my best friend, the
late Chief Solomon Adebayo Ayoku, we dominated Africa. We then diversified to
other areas like agriculture, manufacturing, estate management, the lotto and
entertainment. Today, I have the concession for the Gateway Hotels Abeokuta for
25 years.”

But why the name “Baba Ijebu”? Hear
him…

“It’s
not my making. It’s not the name given to me by my father. It’s a nickname from
the public and our satisfied customers and of course I am from the Ijebu province
maybe that explains it better.”

The Premier Lotto boss had his business path cut out early.
Apart from [being influenced by his parents who were business people, the
course of his life became permanently altered after stumbling upon a book, “How To Be Your Own Boss”.
Indeed, Sir Kesington Adebutu is a self-made man
who rose to the pinnacle of success through hard work, integrity self- discipline
and accountability. As far back 1963, he had set out albeit on a small scale.
He sought for a business that required little or no fund, and then decided be a
local pool agent.
Fondly called Baba ljebu, Adebutu was born on October 24, 1935
in [peru Remo, lkenne Local Government Area of Ogun State. His parents, Alhaji
Karimu Folarin and Alhaja Seliat Olasimbo Adebutu were respected Muslim leaders
in the community.
Adebutu, the second child of his mother, later converted to Christianity.
According to him, he found it difficult to understand and memorise the Arabic
language used for prayers in Islamic religion.
Adebutu attended Wesley Primary School, Iperu Remo from 1942
to 1948. He couldn’t finish however and proceeded to ljero Baptist School,
Ebute-Metta, Lagos where he completed his primary education in 1950. A very
brilliant child, Adebutu led his class in the Primary School Leaving Certificate
Examination and was offered a scholarship to train as a teacher at Iwo Baptist
College.
But curiously, he rejected the scholarship offer for two
reasons: he didn’t want to leave Lagos and also he wanted to continue wearing blazer
and tie like other students.
“I rejected the scholarship because I wanted to stay in
the neighbourhood for my studies and also wear school blazer and tie like other
students,” he said in an interview.
Rather than train as a teacher, Adebutu opted to continue his
education at Baptist Academy, Lagos where he met other students like the late
ChiefMolade Okoya Thomas and Justice Holloway (retd). But it was at Remo Secondary
School, Shagamu, Ogun State where he later moved to that he sat for his WASCE
and passed in flying colours.
Though, rascally and notorious for playing truant in school –
challenges his mother eventually helped him to overcome Adebutu was a jolly
good fellow who was always in the company of his friends. Kind-hearted and
generous, he would always share whatever he had with his numerous friends and
other people around him. No wonder, Adebutu later in life became a great philanthropist!

After leaving secondary school, Adebutu worked as a clerical officer
at Cable and Wires Limited and later got another offer at Clafin Chemicals
Limited as a salesman. His working experiences in these companies proved useful
several years later when he started his own company, Face-to-Face Million
Dollar Pools Limited.
At Clafin, a pharmaceutical company that later became known as
Sterling Products, Adebutu rose from the position of salesman to sales manager.
